A squeal that stops the moment I press the brake

That is usually the wear indicator, a little spring tab that is meant to sing when the pad gets down to about three millimetres. It goes quiet under the pedal because the pad is pushed flat against the disc.

It is a warning, not an emergency: you have a few hundred kilometres, not a few thousand. A squeal that gets worse when you press is a different thing — that is metal on metal, and by then the disc is being cut.

How we tell: Louder in the morning, quieter once the brakes are warm.

Whatever comes off your car is bagged with your registration on it and handed to you when you collect. It is the simplest proof that the part we charged you for was the part we changed.
